All Souls Day and the Importance of Living a Life Pleasing to God (2nd November 2024 Sermon)

All Souls Day and the Importance of Living a Life Pleasing to God

Today's Sermon is from John 6:37-40

The 2nd of November is usually called All Souls Day, and it is important to understand what we recollect on this day. The custom of long intercession for the faithful departed started in the catacombs in the history of the Christian circle. During the month of November, many churches still follow this long-standing custom of intercession for the faithful departed, as a large number of people gather in churches and cemeteries to remember their loved ones who have gone to the nearer presence of the Lord.

As we recollect the memories of our loved ones, it is also very vital for us to remind ourselves of our purpose and way of living in this world in the present. Birth and death are realities that are beyond our control; they take place without our approval or decision. What is important is the life between our birth and death, because in this period of our life, everything we have is according to our decision, approval, and intention. Therefore, Christianity teaches us how we should live this life: a life that is pleasing to God, a life of integrity, accountability, sharing, witness, and holiness. Today, we are called to remind ourselves that we have to be conscious of how we live that life which is in our control.
