All Saints Sunday: A New Heaven (3rd November 2024 Sermon on Confirmation Service)

All Saints Sunday: A New Heaven

Today's Sermon is from John 11:32-44

This All Saints Sunday sermon, “A New Heaven,” preached by the Bishop of Colombo, Right Rev. Dushantha Lakshman Rodrigo, draws on the powerful resurrection story of Lazarus from John 11:32-44. Bishop Rodrigo likely uses this narrative to offer comfort and hope to those mourning loved ones, emphasizing Jesus’ victory over death and the promise of eternal life in a “New Heaven.” Knowing Bishop Rodrigo’s context in Sri Lanka, where communities have faced hardship and loss, the sermon likely carries a particularly poignant message of resilience and the enduring power of faith in the face of grief. By connecting the story of Lazarus with the Christian hope of resurrection, the sermon provides solace and assurance of a future free from suffering in the presence of God.

At confirmation, we renew our Baptismal vows and enter into a newness of life. We cannot do anything with our own might, but [we can do all things] because of the power, courage, and strength given by God. We are entering into All Saints’ tide and the Kingdom Season. During this one-month period, we reflect on a few themes; death, heaven, and hell are some of them. Remembrance Sunday is another important day we observe. We need to understand that we are one with all saints and also with all those who have gone before us. As one family, we are crossing into a fuller life. God is moving us towards that full communion. Therefore, our identity is in a community. Our baptism holds us together in this community and the fellowship of all believers.
