Message from the Vicar
Greetings and welcome to Christ Church, Galle Face, Colombo 03, English Congregation Website! We are delighted to see you as a part of our community. Feel free to discover, interact, and collaborate with us to create something wonderful for the glory of God and for the benefit of all creatures.
The contribution and commitment of the pioneer CMS missionaries especially Rev. Pettit, Church of Ceylon, Upcountry TCM, Missions in Thinnaveli district in South India and the native Ceylonese extended was resulted in this majestic House of God to worship and give thanks and praise.
Christ Church, Galle Face was consecrated by Rt. Rev. James Chapman, the First Anglican Bishop of Sri Lanka on 13 October 1853. Originally Christ Church was then known as Colombo Mission Church where the early Missionaries who preached the Gospel in the street corners, the Bible Women who visited homes in the Slave Island and Colpetty and prayed with families and the Clergy who ministered tirelessly to draw in the believers have influenced for the formation of a Strong Faith Community at Galle Face to date.
As you walk into this Church surrounded by the high rise buildings in the Central Colombo and the busy world outside, you do feel the aura and the presence of our Lord in this Holy sanctuary. You will also find the Gothic style of this Church building, the roof and the walls interior and exterior and the stained glass in the Sanctuary and in the East Window demonstrate the then British Gothic Architectural heritage.Â
I cordially invite you to visit Christ Church, Galle Face and to reflect and be a partner on the Mission of this Church; to witness to the unconditional and exclusive Love of our God through the Vision of our Church Community “The union of races in the church of Christ”. Your presence and participation in our Church will absolutely be a strength to us in the present context to work together for the betterment of our Church Community and our Social Community Ministries. We have Holy Eucharist Worships in English and Tamil in different times on Sundays; English Holy Eucharist 7.00am, 10.30am and 6.00pm and Tamil Holy Eucharist 8.15am.
My humble prayer is that all who enter the doors of this church that they may be enabled to renew their relationship with their Creator and may find God’s peace, strength, grace and above all God’s Divine presence in their life.
Welcome! Worship! Witness!
